Selco Builders Warehouse (Selco) is a builders merchant in the United Kingdom with over 70 branches nationwide and an online store. Selco is part of Grafton Group plc, and is a member of Builders Merchants Federation (BMF).

History[edit]

Selco was established in 1895 as Sewell & Co (Timber) Ltd, a family owned business based in Birmingham, UK.[1] It subsequently became Selco in 1982 when the business model became exclusive for tradespeople.

In 1990, Selco was purchased by British Dredging plc, a UK builders merchant. In 1998, it was purchased by Grafton Group plc.

In 2020, Selco celebrated 125 years of serving the trade[2]where it opened its first distribution centre in Cowley, Oxfordshire.[3]

Operations[edit]

Selco operates online and through a number of branches across England and Wales.

Selco initially operated in the Midlands with branches across Birmingham. In 1990, it began its expansion into Wales opening a branch in Swansea and two years later, in 1992, opened a branch in Cardiff. Selco then continued to expand in England, opening a Bristol branch in 1995 and its first branch in London at Walthamstow in North London in 2002.[4] In 2008, Selco opened branches in the North of England including; Leeds, Bradford and Ardwick in Manchester.[5] In 2009, Selco opened its first East Midlands branch in Nottingham. Since then, Selco has continued to expand operations opening branches across England including; Leicester, St Albans, Bristol Filton, Leeds Roundhay Road, Milton Keynes and Chelmsford.

In 2015, Selco launched a transactional website allowing tradespeople to purchase online with next day delivery and click and collect options.
