The Selenomonadaceae are a family of Gram-negative, anaerobic, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria in the order Selenomonadales and class Negativicutes.[2] Members of the family occur in animal-associated and environmental habitats, including the gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, wastewater, and brewery environments.[2]
Taxonomy
The family was established during a genome-based reorganization of the class Negativicutes that separated its members among the orders Selenomonadales, Acidaminococcales, and Veillonellales.[3] Its nomenclatural type is the genus Selenomonas.[1]
A subsequent phylogenomic reassessment found that several species then classified in Selenomonas belonged to distinct genus-level lineages. Among the resulting changes, species were transferred to Centipeda and the newly established genera Dongibacter, Pseudoselenomonas, Schleiferibacter, and Wylensekiella.[2] LPSN recognizes 12 genera with validly published and correct names in the family.[1]
Phylogeny
The nomenclature and family membership shown below follow LPSN. The branching order was derived from the 120-marker-protein bacterial tree of GTDB release R11-RS232, using one represented species for each genus and displaying only the genus names.[4][5]
