Self Caught Flight

Player about to catch a flying disc

Self Caught Flight (SCF) is a flying disc sport discipline included in Allround competitions. The sport is divided into two parts, MTA and TRC. The aim of the event is to test the players control of the disc, understanding of the wind and catching. This means the event requires both great technique and physical capability, which is why it's a staple event of the allround competitions.[1][2][3][4] Common discs are the "Condor",[5] "Lynx",[6] and "Fastback"[7]

The world record for MTA is 16.72 seconds (1984, Don cain (USA)).[8][9] The TRC record stands at 94 meters (2003, Christian Sandström (SWE)).[10][11]

MTA[edit]

MTA short for Maximum Time Aloft. As the name suggests, the goal of the event is to get the disc to stay aloft for as long as possible. Everyone gets 5 attempts and only the best score (longest time aloft) is counted as the final result.[12] The player gets 15 seconds to throw, if they exceed this time the throw is discarded. Three or more people time the throw from the moment the disc exits the throwers hand to the moment the disc touches them again, the median of the three (or more) recorded times is the final score for that throw. The disc is allowed to touch all body parts but only one at a time. If the player catches with one hand and has the frisbee under control, the time is counted as valid.[13][14]

TRC[edit]

TRC short for Throw, Run, and Catch. The intent of the event is to throw the disc as far away from one place to another and still catching it.[12] Players throw from inside a marked circle which is where the measurment is done from (with a rangefinder or step-counting). The measurment is from the place the disc first touched the player and NOT the players position when catching. Everyone gets 5 attempts and only the best score (longest throw) is counted as the final result. The player gets 15 seconds to throw, if they exceed this time the throw is discarded. The disc is allowed to touch all body parts, but only one at a time. If the player catches with one hand and has the frisbee under control, the time is counted as valid.[13][14]

Scoring[edit]

The final SCF score is counted by multiplying the MTA time with 5.5 and adding that to the TRC score.

Example: Player A's best MTA time was 7 seconds and their best TRC score was 50 meters; 5.5 x 7 + 50 = 88.5: Player A gets 88.5 points.[13]
