Selina Mills is an award-winning writer, journalist and broadcaster who is legally blind.[1]

She has regularly written for various publications including The Observer and The Spectator. She has a keen interest in disability and how it shapes our world. Selina's first book, Life Unseen: A Story of Blindness,[2][3] was published by Bloomsbury[4] on July 13th 2023 and the paperback launched in October 2024.[5] The book was published in French in 2025 by Éditions Les Pérégrines[6].[7]

She lives in London and is married to philosopher Naci Mehmet.[8]

Journalism Career

Selina Mills is a British writer and journalist. She was educated at Brown University,[9] RI, USA, where she studied History and at Lucy Cavendish College,[10] Cambridge University[11] where she completed her Masters on "The City" in the novels of Henry James.[12][13][14]

Mills has worked for over twenty years as a foreign correspondent, city reporter and arts/book reviewer. She has also worked as a radio producer and presenter. She contributes regularly to a variety of national and international publications including The Spectator,[15] The Guardian,[16] Harper's Bazaar,[17] The Observer[16] and The Daily Telegraph[18].[19][20][21][22]

Early years

Selina began her journalistic career in 1993 as a junior reporter for Reuters[23] in Rome.[24] She was one of only two journalists permitted in the courtroom during the sentencing of the Erich Priebke war crimes trial in 1997 in Rome. Her report was published world-wide, including on the front page of the IHT (International Herald Tribune), now owned by The New York Times[25].[26]

Reporter and Broadcast journalist

She returned to London in 1998 and worked on various business publications, ending up at the business desk at The Daily Telegraph reporting on commercial property. She was one of the few journalists to interview Larry Silverstein, American businessman and owner of the Twin Towers, after 9/11. She also reported from the American Embassy[27] in London where many gathered to remember the victims.[28]

In 2007, she moved to the BBC Business desk where she spent five years producing and reporting business and foreign desk stories on shows such as Today (BBC Radio 4)[29] and In Touch[30] (radio series).[31][32] In 2013, she collaborated with the BBC and Loftus Productions on BBC Radio 4 - Disability: A New History.[33][34]

Diversity and Inclusion Advisor

In 2015, Selina progressed into public relations specialising in diversity and inclusion. In the past ten years, she has represented various non-profits and charities, including Leonard Cheshire,[35] Blue Badge Access Awards[36] and The Churchill Fellowship[37].[38][39][40] Selina currently advises major non-profits and corporations on access and inclusion strategy. In 2022, she was listed as one of the UK's top 100 disabled people in the media[41].[42]

In 2024, Selina was announced as a judge for the ACDI[43] (Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses) Literary Prize.[44]

Opera and libretto

In 2018, Selina conceived and co-wrote the libretto with Nicola Werenowska[45] of the award-winning[46] opera, The Paradis Files,[47] with music composed by Errollyn Wallen[48] and produced by Graeae Theatre Company[49].[50][51][52][53][54] It toured around the UK[55] and premiered at London's South Bank[56] to critical acclaim[57].[58][59][60]

Author

Selina is the author of Life Unseen: A Story of Blindness[2] (Bloomsbury, 2023) which has been published in hardback and paperback. The book was published in French in 2025 by Éditions Les Pérégrines.[6]

She has also contributed chapters to various anthologies including An Evening of Dreams[61] (Swedenborg Society, 2017) and the forthcoming Manchester University Press[62] 2026 anthology of essays on Indiana Jones.[63][64]

She is currently focusing her research on the history and culture of sausages.
