Early Life[edit]
Semagngeta was born on April 16, 1993, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Semagngeta had spent his childhood telling Teret (an Amharic word for tales/stories) to his friends. He was especially good at visually detailed and emotionally dramatic stories. He had never really imagined becoming a filmmaker, or if it was even possible for him, and his friends as well.
As a teenager, however, he grew up teaching himself about filmmaking and he has been working on experimental short films to hone his skills. As a self-taught filmmaker, who has more than 10 years of experience[4], he has come a long way in the DIY and guerilla filmmaking style to develop and prosecute his short films.
Career[edit]
Throughout the 2010s, Semagngeta had a number of jobs, both in and outside of the film industry. At the age of 18, while being a Mechanical Engineering student at Bahir Dar University, Semagngeta set his foot in the film industry working as a Production Assistant. After spending a year there, he started working as an assistant camera operator at two different film companies. Ever since, he's been involving himself in different film production companies taking different titles such as Editor, Graphics Designer, and Director of Photography.
After his graduation, he was working as an Aircraft Systems Power Plant Engineer at Ethiopian Airlines until his first narrative short film, My Happiness, got into 7 international film festivals. He then decided to quit his job to be a full-time filmmaker and later on started his own film production company, called Guzo Films.
Ever since his breakthrough, he had been producing, writing, and directing various short films, TV series, documentaries, and corporate videos. For instance, he has produced Many Loves (Bizu Fikir), which won the Best Short Film Award at NDIVA Women's FF Ghana, My Happiness (Short Film)[5], 5 Lelit web series, Brotherly Sisterly (Sitcom), Love and Brain[6], and The Trip[7] (Award-winning short film)[8].
Semagngeta is currently developing his first feature film titled The General, The Traitor, The Farmer, and The Queen and finished filming his limited TV series titled Liya[9][10].
