Sen yetim emassan (English: You Are Not an Orphan) is a 1962 Soviet Uzbek drama film directed by Shuhrat Abbosov and written by Rahmat Fayziy.[1] The film was produced by Uzbekfilm and is considered one of the notable works of Uzbek cinema.
The film is based on Rahmat Fayziy's novella of the same name. It depicts the true story of a Tashkent family who adopted 14 orphaned children of different nationalities during the World War II period.
Plot
The film is based on real events that took place in Tashkent during the Second World War. It tells the story of blacksmith Shoahmed Shoahmedov and his wife Bahri Akramova, who adopted 14 children evacuated from different regions of the Soviet Union during the war.[2]
The family provided care and support to children who had lost their parents because of the war, becoming a symbol of kindness, solidarity, and humanitarian values.[3]
Historical background
During World War II, thousands of children were evacuated from war-affected regions of the Soviet Union to Central Asia. Many Uzbek families welcomed these children into their homes. The story of the Shoahmedov family became one of the most famous examples of this humanitarian effort.
The events portrayed in the film later inspired Rahmat Fayziy to continue developing the story in his 1970 novel Hazrati inson ("The Noble Human"), which was dedicated to the people who cared for orphaned children during the war.

- In 1963, the film received an award at the International Film Festival in Frankfurt.
- In 1964, writer Rahmat Fayziy received the award for Best Screenplay at the First All-Union Film Festival held in Leningrad.
- In 1972, Shuhrat Abbosov received the Uzbekistan Lenin Komsomol Prize for You Are Not an Orphan and Tashkent – City of Bread.
- In 1974, Abbosov received the Hamza State Prize of the Uzbek SSR for You Are Not an Orphan and Abu Rayhan Beruni.
Legacy
You Are Not an Orphan remains one of the significant films in Uzbek cinema history. The film is remembered for its portrayal of compassion, family values, and the role of Uzbekistan in providing shelter to children affected by World War II.
