Sensory biology a field of neuroscience that focuses on understanding how we perceive the world around us. This includes sensations such as touch, cold, heat, pain and itch. The Nobel Prize was awarded to Ardem Patapoutian in 2021 for his work in characterizing the PIEZO1, PIEZO2, and TRPM8 receptors that detect pressure, menthol, and temperature; David Jay Julius shared the prize for the characterization of the TRPV1 and TRPM8 receptors that detect capsaicin, menthol, and temperature as well. These discoveries have unveiled a new paradigm of sensory perception mediated by specific molecules and neurons.
