SeraNovo is a biotechnology company based in Leiden, Netherlands, that develops formulation technologies for oral drug delivery.[1][2] The company operates within the Leiden Bio Science Park, a major Dutch life sciences cluster.[3]

History

SeraNovo was founded in 2017 in Leiden.[3] In 2018, it won the LifeSciences@Work Venture Challenge at the Dutch Life Sciences Conference.[4] In 2019, SeraNovo received funding from the UNIIQ proof-of-concept fund, a regional investment program.[5]

Technology

A large proportion of drug candidates discovered in modern pharmaceutical research have low aqueous solubility or low permeability, which limits their oral bioavailability.[6] This challenge has been reported as a major cause of late-stage drug development failure.[7]

Peer-reviewed reviews describe approaches such as amorphous solid dispersions and lipid-based systems to improve oral drug absorption.[8]

Trade publications report that SeraNovo has developed a platform, called NanoGlass, which uses solid dispersion techniques to stabilize drugs in an amorphous state and increase dissolution rates.[9]

Coverage in Pharmaceutical Technology notes that the platform has been applied to small molecules and emerging therapeutic modalities such as protein degraders and peptides.[10]

The company is also reported to provide preformulation screening, prototype development, and stability testing services.[11]

Collaborations and partnerships

In 2020, SeraNovo signed a second license agreement with Carna Biosciences to develop an oral formulation of a kinase inhibitor.[12][13]

In 2022, the company entered into a second agreement with Graviton Bioscience[14] and signed a multi-compound agreement with Ildong Pharmaceutical, a South Korean company.[15]

SeraNovo has also collaborated with Gattefossé to present webinars on lipid-based formulation approaches.[16]

In 2023, AstraZeneca and SeraNovo announced a multi-compound collaboration to apply SeraNovo’s formulation platform across selected drug candidates.[1][2]

Recognition

SeraNovo’s award at the LS@W Venture Challenge and its receipt of UNIIQ funding have been reported by Dutch life sciences organizations.[4][5] Coverage of its partnerships has appeared in trade publications including Pharmaceutical Technology and Contract Pharma.[2]
