Serge Maschewski
Serge Maschewski (Ukrainian: Сергій Машевський, romanized: Serhij Maschewskyj, Russian: Сергей Иванович Машевский, romanized: Sergej Iwanowitsch Maschewski; (born December 27, 1975 in Pavlodar, Kazakh SSR, USSR) is a Lutheran theologian, pastor, and bishop of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ukraine.
Early years
Maschewski was born in Pavlodar, Kazakh SSR on December 27, 1975. His family was part of the German minority in Soviet Union. He studied Philology at Pavlodar State University S. Toraigyrov and graduated and worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature. He first attended theological seminaries by missionaries of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Kazakhstan in 1993. In the 1990s, some Christians of the former Soviet Union were given the opportunity to study Theology in the United States,[1] allowing, Maschewski to move to Fort Wayne, Indiana where he graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in 1999.[2]
Ministry
After his studies, Maschewski returned to Kazakhstan. In June 1997, he was ordained for the pastoral ministry by Archbishop Kretschmar (of ELCROS) in Astana. Since 1999, he has been teaching Systematic Theology and Church History in the Spiritual Center of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kazakhstan. He served as a pastor in Astana and Eastern Kazakhstan. Since 2005, Maschewski has been a adviser for the Bishop Novgorodov and participated actively in the social services of the church. Furthermore, he ministered to the congregations of the deportated German minority in Russia.
From 2009 to 2013, Maschewski served as pastor in the congregation of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ukraine St. Katherine in Dnipro[3] and the Eastern Ukrainian Church district.
In 2013, he was elected as Bishop for the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ukraine. It was the first time that the church’s synod elected a bishop on their own, as before the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria sent their chosen pastors for this position.[4] Besides the administrative duties of this position, Maschewski focuses on developing the church in social and missionary areas and strengthening the local congregations through the training of new servants for ministry[2] and the theological seminaries. These seminaries are led by national and international Lutheran pastors and teachers. [5] He has also extended the church's relations with other religious organizations and society in general.[6][7]
