Early life and education[edit]

Sergey Sholom and his twin brother, Maxim, were born on 10 February 1978, in Moscow, USSR, to parents Anatoly and Marina Sholom.[2] As a child, Sholom participated in soccer and ice hockey matches whenever possible. He spent much of his free time playing video games such games as Golden Axe, Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake.

Sholom was educated at 220 School in Moscow from 1984 to 1992[2]. In 1992, he moved to a school for students displaying advanced aptitude in mathematics. He graduated in 1994.

From 1995 to 2000, Sholom studied at the Russian State University of Technology in Moscow, where he earned degrees in engineering and financial management, plus a Ph.D. in mathematical modeling. He graduated in 2000.

Professional gaming career[edit]

In 1997, Sholom, his brother Maxim, Igor Kalashnikov, and Anton Murashov formed a professional team playing the first-person shooter (FPS) video game Quake 1.[3] The team was named DataForce. Sholom played under the alias [DF]Judge.[2] Maxim Sholom played as [DF]Maxer, Kalashnikov used the nickname [DF]Skynet, and Murashov used the alias [DF]CRaZeR.

During its first year, DataForce claimed the number-one ranking in Russia, which it held until 2000. The team won tournaments in Saint Petersburg and Penza in 1998 and at the Moscow Gamers’ League in 1999.[2]

DataForce was disbanded in 2000.

Tournament management[edit]

During Sholom’s gaming career, he and his DataForce teammates organized several Quake tournaments in front of live audiences[4]. The most notable of these was Moscow Gamers’ League, which was held from 4 September 1998 to 23 February 1999.[3]

A second rendition, known as MGL2, was held later in 1999. Sholom and his DataForce team competed in MGL2 and finished in first place out of a field of 20 teams.

These tournaments are among the earliest examples of esports and the first of their kind in Russia.[5]

Gaming-industry activities[edit]

After retiring from professional gaming, Sholom began working as a game developer. He founded his first game development company, Datcroft Games, in 2004.[3]

Sholom has been involved in a range of blockchain projects since 2016.[6]

In December 2016, Sholom and business partner Alex Migitko founded GameCredits D.O.O., with Sholom as CEO.[7] The company was founded around the GameCredits (GAME) digital asset, which has been in circulation since 1 September 2014.[8] The company is based in Belgrade, Serbia, and has about 100 team members working in offices around the world.

On 22 March, 2018, Sholom announced the upcoming release of GNation’s first two products: GShare - a desktop PC client that allows users to rent their excess computing power in exchange for GAME, and GPlay - a mobile game store that allows gamers to spend GAME and compete in mobile esports tournaments.

On 4 April, 2018, Sholom spoke at the ECOSOC forum at United Nations headquarters in New York, U.S.A., about his work developing products that aim to realize the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.[10]
