Sergey Smbatyan (born 23 September 1987) is an Armenian conductor. He is the Founding Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, the Principal Conductor of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Artistic Director of the Khachaturian International Competition.

At the age of 28, Smbatyan received the title of Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres[1], awarded by the Minister of Culture and Communication of France. In recognition of his contribution to the formation of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and his work promoting Armenian music and culture, in 2016 Smbatyan was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia by the President of the Republic of Armenia.[2]

Early life and training[edit]

Born in Yerevan to a musical family, Smbatyan began violin lessons at age four under the tuition of his grandmother Tatyana Hayrapetyan, and studied at the Central Music School in Moscow. When he was nine his family relocated to Armenia, and he continued his studies at the Tchaikovsky Music School in Yerevan.

At the age of fifteen Smbatyan entered Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan where he studied violin with Professor Bagrad Vardanyan, and conducting with renowned teacher and conductor Yuri Davtyan. During this time he also undertook courses abroad in Vienna and Zurich with violinist and teacher Zakhar Bron. He graduated with a Masters in Violin in 2007, and a Masters in Operatic and Symphonic Conducting in 2008, followed by a PhD at the Yerevan Academy of Fine Arts and further violin studies at Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Professor Sergey Kravchenko .

In 2010 Smbatyan moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music, during which time he also took lessons with Riccardo Muti and Sir Colin Davis [3], whose tuition greatly influenced his conducting. In 2018 he received the academic title of Associate Professor from his alma mater the Komitas State Conservatory.

Conducting career[edit]

In 2005 while studying in Yerevan, Smbatyan founded the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, which he has led as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor since its inception. In 2019 he was appointed the Principal Conductor of Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

Smbatyan has led tours with the Armenian State Symphony and Malta Philharmonic throughout Europe and the United States, including at Vienna’s Musikverein, the Berline Philharmonie, Salzburg’s Großes Festspielhaus, London’s Barbican Centre, the Gasteig Munich, the Rudolfinum in Prague, the Grand Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory, and New York’s Carnegie Hall, where he made his debut at the age of 28.[4]

Smbatyan has collaborated with leading soloists and artists, including actor John Malkovich who performed with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra on tour throughout Armenia, Asia and Latin America in 2015, 2016 and 2017.[5]

Alongside his conducting work in Armenia and Malta, Smbatyan has developed an international career including guest conducting engagements with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Russian National Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Sinfonia Varsovia, and many others.

Other projects[edit]

With the aim to promote Armenian culture and contemporary music, Smbatyan has initiated festivals including the Khachaturian International Festival, the Armenian Composing Art Festival, the “Contemporary Classics” Composers’ Festival, and the “Armenia” International Music Festival.[6]

To mark the 20 th anniversary of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child in 2009 Smbatyan founded the UNICEF Children’s Chamber Orchestra, offering high-level performance experience for young musicians aged 10-15.[7] In 2015 he initiated the “24/04” World Orchestra, commemorating the centenary of the start of the Armenian Genocide by gathering 123 musicians from 43 countries to perform as a collective call for peace across the world. [8] In 2016 Smbatyan initiated the All Armenian Choir and Orchestra ‘Generation of Independence’ project, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Armenian independence by bringing together 1,144 Armenian musicians to perform on the same stage. [9] In 2018 Smabtyan launched the ‘DasA’ program with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, delivering classical music education and access to orchestral concerts to 12,000 students in 35 high schools. [10]

As part of the 2019 World Congress of Information Technology, Smbatyan conducted the first ever concert of music written live by AI. Over 75,000 people watched the concert by the WCIT World Orchestra, a specially created orchestra of players from the fifteen countries that had ever hosted the Congress.[11]

In celebration of Armenia's National Day at Expo 2020 Dubai, Smbatyan and the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra brought Khachaturian Jazz to the Al Wasl stage.[12]
