Sergey Vasilevich Vershinin (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; born July 24, 1954) is a Soviet and Russian diplomat. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Turkey since February 20, 2026. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (2018-2026).
Biography
He graduated from the Faculty of International Relations of MGIMO of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1976) and the Diplomatic Academy of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991). In diplomatic work since 1976.
In 1976-1981 he was an employee of the Embassy of the USSR in Morocco.
In 1984-1991 he was a member of the Embassy of the USSR in Algeria.
In 1993-1997 he was an adviser-envoy of the Russian Embassy in Tunisia.
In 1997-2000 he was Head of the Department of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 31 December 1999 to 8 December 2003, he served as Russian Ambassador to Algeria.
In 2005-2018 he was Director of the Department of the Middle East and North Africa of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 27 March 2018 to 20 February 2026 — Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation He supervised the Middle East settlement, international humanitarian initiatives, interaction with organizations to the United Nations, as well as information security issues in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In June 2025, it became known that Vershinin would become Russian ambassador to Turkey, succeeding Alexei Yerkhov. From February 20, 2026 he is the Russian Ambassador to Turkey.
He speaks Arabic, French and English.
