Sergio Lavandero, Chilean Scientist

Sergio Lavandero González (Santiago, September 19, 1959[1]) is a Chilean pharmaceutical chemist[2] and doctor in biochemistry[3]. In 2019, he was part of the 6 scientific leaders invited by the journal Nature Reviews in Cardiology, to describe the most important scientific advances in cardiovascular medicine that have occurred in the last 15 years, those that are occurring in the present and those that are projected for the next 15 years (15th Anniversary Viewpoint, Nature Reviews Cardiology, 2019)[4]. In 2020, he was recognized by Expertscape as the number one in Latin America and Chile, regarding research on the heart and cardiac mitochondria for the last ten years[5][6][7]

In the field of teaching and scientific research, he is dedicated to the area of signal transduction of cardiovascular diseases[8]. Currently, he is a full professor at the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences & Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile, adjunct professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, director and researcher of the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS) and researcher at the Center for Molecular Studies of the Cell (CEMC)[9].

Biography

He studied at the Instituto Nacional and then he began to study Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Chile, continuing his doctoral studies in biochemistry at the same university[3]. He obtained his doctorate degree with the thesis supervised by Professor Mario Sapag-Hagar. He studied the role of growth factors in the development and function of breast tissue[10]. He also have been improved in various institutions: National Heart & Lung Institute of the Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine (London, England), Erasmus Universitat (Rotterdam, Holland), National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, USA), St. Vincent's Hospital, Research Cardiovascular Center (Melbourne, Australia) and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, Texas, USA)[3].

Within the University of Chile, he has held positions in the university administration such as: member of the Higher Commission for Academic Qualification (2008 and 2010); member of the Evaluation Council (2010 and 2012); Vice Chancellor for Research and Development of the University of Chile (2012-2014)[11] and currently serves as a University Senator in the period from 2018 to 2022[8].

Line of research

His research focuses on the communication systems that control the various normal cellular functions and their alterations that lead to the genesis and development of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, both highly prevalent pathologies in Chile and worldwide[12][13][14]. His studies as a researcher have been financed by multiple national and international projects: such as the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FONDECYT), Science and Technology Research Ring, Regional Associative Project for Scientific Dissemination and Assessment and Technological EXPLORA, Fund for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Development (FONDEF) and Fund for Financing Research Centers in Priority Areas (FONDAP)[3].

His research focuses on the discovery of new mechanisms in the development of cardiovascular diseases, which are the number one cause of death worldwide, and are estimated to claim 17.9 million lives each year (31% of deaths global)[15].

a) New mechanisms in the development of cardiovascular diseases. He described ideas, mechanisms and cellular processes that occur in the genesis and development of cardiac pathologies as well as potential therapeutic targets for their treatment[16][17][18][19][20][21][22].

b) Angiotensin-(1-9); new regulator of the function and structure of the cardiovascular system. In collaboration with doctors María Paz Ocaranza, Jorge Jalil and Mario Chiong, they described at the first time, that the peptide angiotensin-(1-9) generated by ACE2 from angiotensin I, it is a new regulator of the functioning and structure of the cardiovascular system. This peptide has cardioprotective, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic actions. The ACE2 system, angiotensin-(1-7) and angiotensin-(1-9) are considered both a counterregulator of the ACE/angiotensin II system and a new pharmacological target[23][24]. Interestingly, ACE2 is also the receptor for the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. This virus destroys ACE2 and probably alters the activity of this new counterregulatory system[25].

Public health policies and scientific dissemination

  • Creation and direction of the first Chilean Center for the study of Chronic Diseases Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases, (ACCDiS) formed by the University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile[8]. In ACCDiS, transdisciplinary research is carried out on cardiovascular diseases and cancer; it also forms advanced human capital, develops a national and international scientific collaboration network and contributes to the development of public health policies[26][27][28][29]. This institution studies for the first time in Chile, the natural history of chronic non-communicable diseases through the Maule Cohort (MAUCO)[30]. Recently, ACCDiS ranked 3rd (2246 of the total) among all the Chilean research institutions in the SCImago Institutions Ranking (SIR) 2020, after the University of Chile and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, who were ranked according to a combination of three performance indicators: research, innovation and social impact[31].
  • Installation and initial management of the Regional Associative Project for Scientific and Technological Dissemination and Assessment EXPLORA: PAR Explora Northern Metropolitan Region (2019-2022). Its principal aim is to summon girls, boys, young people and adults to participate in activities for the dissemination and assessment of science and technology, arousing curiosity and bringing them closer to knowledge from different scientific areas. This project also allows educating and disseminating to society issues related to chronic non-communicable diseases and their prevention. Its actions cover 33% of the population of the Metropolitan Region (approximately 410,000 preschool, basic and secondary education students) who reside in 17 communes in the north and east area[32][33].
