Serra International

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Serra International (a.k.a. Serra) is an international Roman Catholic lay community for the promotion of spiritual professions. Its work has been supported by the Catholic Church in Rome, mentioned in speeches by Pope Benedict and covered in the Vatican City newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.[1]

History

Serra International was founded in 1935 as an information platform for men in Seattle, Washington.[2] In 1986, membership was opened to women.[3]

The name commemorates Saint Junípero Serra, an 18th-century Franciscan priest who established Spanish missions in California, then a part of Alta California, a province of New Spain.[4] Serra was canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis;[5] he was the first saint to be canonized at a ceremony held in the United States.[6]

On May 3, 1951, Serra was incorporated into the Pontifical Work for Spiritual Professions of the Congregation for Catholic Education.[2]

In the 1950s and 1960s, offshoots were established in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In the 1970s and 1980s, chapters opened in Great Britain, Brazil and Spain.[3]

Organization

As of 2006, the community operates globally and has over 19,000 members (men, women and permanent deacons) in over 800 Serra clubs in 37 countries, with the registered main office of Serra International in Chicago.[2] As of 2006, there are 12 national councils.[3]

In the United States, more than 10,000 members are involved in 290 local Serra clubs.[2]

Founded in 1951, the Serra International Foundation supports the work of the Serra community.[2]
