Service Operations Vessel (SOV) DRAFT
A Service Operations Vessel, commonly abbreviated as SOV, is a vessel that supports maintenance of a Wind Farm after the initial installation.
Similar to other offshore vessels, they use Dynamic Positioning technology to maintain a certain position by the windmill.[1] Notable characteristics include special motion compensated gangways for workers to move between the vessel and the wind turbine structure. An SOV usually has onboard a workshop, spare parts storage and can provide accommodations for 40+ personnel.[2]
Some SOVs have tenders to ferry workers to nearby windmills.
Vessels built from the ground up as SOVs are known as Tier 1[3]. SOVs can be converted from other offshore vessels (known as Tier 2).[4]
As of 2021 there are 21 SOVs in operation globally.[5]
There are no SOVs able to operate in the United States. There are 2 under construction for planned wind farms off the Northeast Coast.[6]
It is a common business practice for a maritime firm to own and operate the vessel and charter it to a wind farm operator.
