Sessions College for Professional Design
Sessions College for Professional Design is an accredited, privately-owned, for-profit online design school based in Tempe, Arizona. The College offers Associates Degrees, Undergraduate Certificates, and Vocational Certificates. It is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC)[1] and accredited at the certificate program level by Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools.[2] They are ranked by the US Department of Education as one of the most affordable colleges in the United States,[3] and also Bestcolleges.com[4] rated Sessions College among its top 100 online schools and top 50 colleges offering online Associate Degree programs.

Sessions was originally founded as a start-up company in 1997, where it operated out of New York City before relocating in 2009 to Tempe, Arizona, when it expanded from a certificate-only institution to an accredited, associate degree-granting college. Sessions College now enrolls approximately 773 students.[5] The College offers Associates Degrees, Undergraduate Certificates, and Vocational Certificates in subjects including graphic design, web design, digital media, illustration, advertising design, digital photography and fine arts. In 2017, Sessions was included on Graphic Design USA’s list of Top Graphic Design Schools.[6]
Academics[edit]
The College is run by President Gordon Drummond[7] and CEO Doris Granatowski. Outside of Sessions College, Drummond serves on the board of the Distance Education Accreditation Commission. Until 2015, he was also a board member of the Middle States Association Commission on Secondary Schools.
Sessions College’s 2019 student-to-faculty ratio is 8:1.[8] The faculty is comprised of working professionals in the art and design industries. Faculty use an asynchronous, project-based learning model to deliver regular, online instruction, critiques, discussions, and weekly assignments. For a number of courses, students can choose between a structured, scheduled course and a self-paced option. Throughout their courses, students receive consistent individualized feedback on their work from professors, as well as feedback from peers.

Sessions College has a partnership with Excelsior College, allowing students to apply their Sessions credits to Excelsior to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business and Management or Technology Management in under two years.
Accreditation and memberships[edit]
- Sessions College for Professional Design has undergone five accreditation renewals from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission.
- Sessions is accredited at the certificate level by, and holds membership, with the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools.
- The school is licensed by Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education.[9]
- Sessions is approved as SARA Institution[10] by the National Council for State Authorization Reciproc[11]ity.
- Sessions College is an approved Department of Defense College, a signatory of the 2014 Memorandum of Understanding[12] (MOU) and the President’s Executive Order #13607.[13] Active duty personnel and military spouses are eligible for tuition assistance.
- All of Sessions' programs are approved by the Arizona Veterans Education and Training Approving Agency,[14] including Chapters 30, 33, and 35 of the GI Bill as well as Vocational Rehab, allowing active military service veterans and their families to finance their programs. In 2015, Sessions affirmed their support for the “8 Keys to Veterans’ Success,”[15] steps to assist Veterans and Servicemembers in transitioning to higher education, completing their college programs, and obtaining career-ready skills.
Admission[edit]
Sessions College’s undergraduate and vocational certificates operate on an open admissions policy; any student with a high school diploma or a GED may enroll through their online application system. To apply for an Associates Degree, students must submit transcripts, work samples, a written essay, and TOEFL scores for students for whom English is a second language. Students may begin their studies at the start of any of the school’s three semesters.
Financial aid[edit]
60% of full-time first-time Sessions students receive grant or scholarship aid. As of July 2020, before financial aid, Associate Degree tuition is $440 per credit hour.
