Sever Tipei born November 1, 1943 in Bucharest, Romania, is a composer, theorist, pianist, and Professor of Composition-Theory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Life and career[edit]

Romania

Studied piano (1962-1967) at the Bucharest Conservatory with Cella Delavrancea, Cici Manta, and Silvia Şerbescu, and composition (1967-1971) with Aurel Stroe. In 1970 formed the trio G3+ with soprano Steliana Calos and clarinetist Valeriu Barbuceanu presenting works by Boulez, Earl Brown, Dary John Mizelle, Kazimierz Serocki, Stockhausen, and Webern  in Romanian first audition.  At the same time, he wrote essays and concert reviews for Secolul 20, Viaţa Românească, România Literară, and Contemporanul.

France

In 1971 he left communist Romania and became a political refugee in Paris, France.  Attended a seminar conducted by Daniel Charles at the Université de Paris VII, Vincennes, and informal sessions with Max Deutsch. As a member of the GERM group directed by Pierre Mariétan participated in concerts in France and Switzerland performing and recording works by Pierre Barbaud, John Cage, Luc Ferrari and Terry Riley; also performed in ensembles conducted by Konstantin Simonovich and Stockhausen.  In Paris, he attended meetings of the Equipe de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales (EMAMu) under the direction of Iannis Xenakis and contributed frequently to the Free Europe broadcasts of Monica Lovinescu.

United States

Tipei emigrated to the US in 1972 and became a US citizen in 1978. Studied at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1972-1978) where he obtained a DMA in composition.  He taught at Roosevelt University in Chicago (1975-1978), and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (since 1978) where he is Professor of Composition and Music Theory, National Center for Supercomputing Applications  (NCSA) Faculty Affiliate, and directs the Computer Music Project.

During a Faculty Appointment (Visiting Scientist) (1994-2003) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) he worked on sonification of complex scientific data with mathematician Hans G. Kaper. Together with James W. Beauchamp organized the 1987 International Computer Music Conference (ICMC).

Computer Music[edit]

Softare design[edit]

•        MP1, a computer-assisted (algorithmic) composition program written in FORTRAN and using stochastic distributions, sieves, and Markov chains. In use 1973-1998, it was implemented on the Cray X-MP supercomputer at NCSA in 1986.

•        DIASS (Digital Instrument for Additive Sound Synthesis), functions as part of  MUSIC 4C  synthesis language. A parallel version was implemented on ANL IBM Scalable POWER parallel Computer (1996). Developed at CMP and ANL with Hans G. Kaper.

•        SoundMaker, a command line C++ program used for classroom teaching and demonstration.

•        M4CAVE, Sound Visualization in a VR Environment, renders visual images from sounds produced by DIASS in the CAVE.  Developed at CMP and ANL with Hans G. Kaper.

•        DISSCO, Digital Instrument for Sound Synthesis and Composition, written in C++, a unified approach to music composition and sound synthesis, bringing together both areas in a seamless process. Developed at CMP and ANL, with Hans G. Kaper.
