Sevinc Abbasova (born 27 August 1976) is an Azerbaijani historian, Doctor of History and professor. She is a professor at Nakhchivan State University.[1]

Early life and education

Sevinc Zakir qızı Abbasova was born on 27 August 1976 in Nakhchivan. From 1983 to 1993, she studied at Secondary School No. 7 in Nakhchivan and graduated with an honors certificate.[2]

From 1993 to 1997, she studied history teaching at the Faculty of History and Philology of Nakhchivan State University. From 1997 to 1999, she completed a master's degree at the same university with honors.

Career

Abbasova began her professional career on 1 September 2000 as a temporary inspector in the Academic Affairs Department of Nakhchivan State University. From 16 May 2001, she continued working in the department as a permanent inspector.

On 28 August 2001, she was appointed head of the Azerbaijani History office of the Faculty of History and Philology. She worked on the organization of the educational process, improving methodological support and coordinating the academic and teaching activities of the department.

From 5 June 2006, Abbasova worked as a lecturer at Nakhchivan State University. She taught lectures and seminars on Azerbaijani history at undergraduate and master's levels. On 29 June 2007, she became a senior lecturer.

From 2011 to 2013, she worked as a lecturer in the Department of History at the Academy of Public Administration of Azerbaijan. During this period, she taught subjects related to Azerbaijani history, traditions of statehood and socio-political processes, while continuing her research.

On 11 September 2013, she returned to Nakhchivan State University and worked as a senior lecturer. On 27 May 2014, she was appointed associate professor.

During this period, she worked on improving the educational process, training young researchers and developing academic research. She also gave presentations at national and international academic conferences.

On 20 May 2022, she was appointed professor. She continues her academic and teaching work at Nakhchivan State University. Her research interests include Azerbaijani history, gender studies, social history and state policy on women. She also supervises doctoral and master's students.

Academic work

In 2004, Abbasova defended a dissertation on the history of the development of the women's movement in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History.

In 2017, she defended a doctoral dissertation titled The role of women in the socio-political, socio-economic and cultural development of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1970–2015) and received the degree of Doctor of History.

Public activities

In 2006, Abbasova participated in a project on gender equality in education in Azerbaijan.

She has also been involved in projects related to the study and promotion of national clothing in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Projects on national dance costumes and palace clothing of the Khanates period were developed and presented to the public on her initiative.

She is the author of the National Costumes of the Countries of the World project, which covers the national costumes of countries with which the Republic of Azerbaijan has established diplomatic relations. The project aimed to promote the national and cultural heritage of different peoples.

She also carried out the project Azerbaijani Cinema as a Carrier of National Cultural Heritage, which focused on the promotion of national and cultural values.

In 2014, as part of her Encouraging Reading project, she initiated the opening of the Mominə Khatun Book Café in Nakhchivan. The project aimed to support the development of reading culture among young people.

She is also the author of the Innocent Victims project, which focused on public awareness of the negative consequences of abortion and reproductive health.[3]

On 16 October 2023, she founded the public association Sevinc – Supporting the Development of the Synthesis of National and Moral Values with Modern Challenges.[4]

In March 2026, her book Ilham Aliyev: Global Initiatives Aimed at Women and the Development of Gender Equality (2003–2023) was selected as the best book of the month in the Book No. 1 – Monthly Rating of the Best Books ranking organized by Germany's Stella-Verlag publishing house and the International Guild of Writers (IGW).
