Seymour Avigdor (March 18, 1944 – October 1978) was an American fashion designer and actor.
His first and only film role was in the film Female Trouble (1974), as he played Divine's lawyer at the very ending. Because of his work with John Waters, Avigdor is considered one of the Dreamlanders, Waters' ensemble of regular cast and crew members.
During the 1960s, Avigdor enjoyed commercial success as a fabric designer. He worked with Angelo Donghia, Halston, Stephen Burrows, Clovis Ruffin and Craig Michael Carrieri. Some sources credit Avigdor as being responsible for Donghia's early success in New York City.[1][citation needed]
The eccentricity of Avigdor's apartment loft, located in the Lower East Side, New York, was the subject of several fashion magazines at that time. His tribal, mini geometric prints were also published by The New York Times. In 1979, Avigdor was referred to by the publication as "the creative fabric designer," as it paid homage to him. The New York Times also considered that Avigdor's work helped spark the pattern-on-pattern movement in the 1970s.
Avigdor was openly gay; however, in 1963, he had an affair with German singer Nico.
Only one picture of Avigdor is known to exist. It was taken in his Manhattan apartment in 1974, at the "Female Trouble" premiere by photographer George Fitzgerald.
By the time of his death, Avigdor was struggling with addiction. In October 1978, he overdosed on angel dust, an elephant tranquilizer; the pipe he was smoking fell lit after he overdosed and started a fire, killing him and destroying his apartment. He was 34.
