History[edit]
The club was founded on the 12th October 1976. Geoff Chapple invited 18 people to a meeting at his home in Seymour Road, Staple Hill, Bristol, to discuss setting up a senior football club from the origins of a junior team competing in the Boys' Brigade League. The team was founded and took its name from the road and became Seymour United FC. Ray Walton was elected the first Chairman of the club with Geoff Chapple as Team Manager.
The club initially played their home games at Page Park, the first season consisted of mainly friendly matches against local opposition. The following season saw Seymour United compete in the Avon Regional League where they remained until 1981, when the club gained election to the Bristol and District League. Success soon followed when the team won the Division 6 title, and continued in the following season, finishing runners up to Henbury Sports in Division 5. The club was relegated again the following season.
In 1988, Paul 'Pedro' Williams took over as Team Manager. Instant success followed, with the team winning four league titles in consecutive seasons and reaching its first GFA Cup Final in 1992 – losing 2-1 to Nicholas Wanderers. The team made its second GFA Cup Final appearance in 1995, beating Winterbourne United in extra time, with a stunning solo goal from Robin Chilcott, enabling the club to lift the Junior Cup. During this period, Dave Coles was elected as Club Chairman and provided tremendous moral and financial support throughout his time with Seymour United providing a sound financial foundation to ensure the continued success of the club. In 1989 the club moved from Page Park to a new home ground at Longwell Green Community Centre, where the club was to remain for the next 21 years. Seymour United Reserves were formed in 1993.
Into a new century and Nick Gore’s phenomenal goal scoring record and his achievement saw him awarded the BBC West Country Amateur Footballer of the Year in 2002. In 2003, the added a third, in the Bristol and Avon League. in 2006 Seymour United ‘A’ team gained election to the Bristol and District League and the club celebrated its 30th anniversary. In 2008/9, after several years in the Senior Division of the Bristol and District League the First Team gained election to the Bristol Premier Combination, the Reserves, winning the Division 2 title. In 2009/10 all three teams won promotion; the ‘A’ team to Div 5, the Reserves to Senior Division and the First team to the Bristol Premier Combination Premier Division.
2010 saw the club leave Longwell Green Community Centre and take up residence at The Batch where they remain to this day.
Following relegation in 2014/2015, A fantastic 2017/18 season saw the club win the Bristol Division one with a last day 2-2 draw at home to Bristol Manor Farm res. A nervy ending to a fantastic season on the field. Off the field everyone at the club was saddened by the loss of chairman Dave Coles, what he did for the club will always be appreciated. By way of a small tribute, the bar at The Batch was re-named in his honour.
Present Day[edit]
The shortened 2019/2020 season saw the first team achieve their higher ever finish of 4th in the Premier combination league, Premier Division. A ‘Colts’ team has been added to the club for the 2020/2021, bringing the number of teams to four, and will compete in the bottom division of the Bristol and district league.
