Sh*tshow on BART[edit]

The Sh*tshow on BART was a concert on a moving blue line BART train that occurred on Friday, January 6, 2023. Organized by San Francisco punk bands Surprise Privilege and False Flag, the event lasted for about two hours and spanned from 16th & Mission BART station to Dublin/Pleasanton BART station, before getting stopped at Fruitvale station on the way back to San Francisco. News of the event was spread primarily on Instagram, with the showgoers filling multiple BART cars.[1]. An estimated 300 fans arrived for the show, to the surprise of the bands[2].

The first two BART cars were packed with attendees and at each train stop, showgoers ran out onto the BART platform and into different train cars to get a better spot. The bands were in the very last car of the train and at the Dublin/Pleasanton station, where the train would start to go backward on its way back to San Francisco, the crowd raced out of the train to move to the back again and be in the car with the band. The power in one of the train cars went out for a short period of time, however, this excited the crowd even more[3]. Each band managed to get about 6 songs in before the train was stopped in Fruitvale by a vaporizing device blocking the doors and BART police arrived. When the showgoers were kicked off by the BART police, one attendee was arrested and escorted out to chants of "let him go". Another attendee climbed on top of the train[4]. Neither band was detained or fined, though beforehand they acknowledged that possibility and were not dissuaded[3]

Surprise Privilege has a history of shows dubbed "sh*tshows" that have been chaotic and unpredictable, and the band stated that the idea for the BART show was mostly a joke until they realized they could do it[1][3]. The bands had no ill intentions toward BART or its riders, posting prior to the show to be safe and respectful[4]. The bands have also been praised for carrying on DIY punk traditions and the event even being dubbed "historical". They received mainstream media attention.
