Bengali Word Games: short history[edit]
Shabdabaaji is a collection of unique Bengali word games, designed and developed by Roy Choudhury, a former Radio Jockey. Roy started designing and developing these games, based on some well known English word games like Jumble, Scrabble, Doublets, Anagram, Rebus etc. between 2001 and 2006, when he found that some of the famous English word games do not have a Bengali version anywhere in circulation in well-known newspapers, magazines, periodicals etc. Crosswords were very popular, and vernacular versions were very common in newspapers, magazines etc. Apart from crosswords, a couple of adaptations of English words games, or some indigenous ones were published regularly, but there were very few varieties. The Bengali word game arena was not as rich as the English one. Few notable Bengali authors and personalities did think of unique Bengali word games, or converted the soul of some of the English games into Bengali, but they didn't continue with those games. Dadathakur Sarat Chandra Pandit was one such word-gamer, who created many wonderful palindromes in Bengali, which are famous till date. Sukumar Ray, a genius known for his word-play, puns and nonsense rhymes, might have created some indigenous Bengali word games, based on the English word games created by Lewis Carroll, but they are yet to be found. Other literary figures have dabbled in notable puns, word plays etc., but not many have spent time on serious word game creation. Overall, the world of Bengali word games lacked variety and volume.[edit]
