Shadowplay, also released as The Defeated, is a 2020 television series about the direct aftermath of World War II, seen from the perspective of 1946's Berlin.

Plot[edit]

The show follows protagonist Max McLaughlin (Taylor Kitsch), a US police investigator delegated to Berlin in 1946, and tasked with assisting Elsie Garten (Nina Hoss), a supervisor of a struggling local law enforcement group, in the creation of a properly-functioning police force.

McLaughlin finds Berlin to be a war-damaged city, plagued by economic hardships, political turmoil, general misery, and rampant criminality and lawlessness. His initial guidance and assistance to the local policemen quickly evolves into a full investigation of a series of violent crimes, committed by a man known as "Engelmacher" ("Angel Maker"), an ex-doctor (Sebastian Koch) turned sadistic gangster (very loosely based on Werner Gladow, a real-life post-war German criminal, who idolised Al Capone and had an ambition to take over Berlin's underworld). "Angel Maker", who operates a prostitution ring, has assembled a group of indebted and obedient followers around himself, thanks to lending his medical skills, seemingly for free.

At the same time, a mysterious American vigilante (Logan Marshall-Green) is tracking down and mercilessly torturing and executing concentration camp guards and other Nazi war criminals, who have managed to evade justice, and who may be hiding and preparing to flee the country thanks to the protection of corrupt government officials.
