Shagun Butani (born 1966) is an Indian classical dancer and teacher specializing in Odissi, a classical dance that originated in Odisha, and Seraikella Chhau, a folk dance with origins in eastern India.[1][2] Butani, who trained under the Chhau exponent Shashadhar Acharya, is one of very few women in the country who practise the folk Chhau dance.[3][4]

She is the founder of Sudhaaya Dance Foundation in Gurugram, which works towards spreading awareness among the youth of Indian performing arts, and encourages participation.[5]

Biography[edit]

Butani took up classical dance at the age of seven, and trained in Odissi and Chhau.[6][7] Early in her career, she also trained in the Graham technique of American Contemporary Dance in New York for two years.[2] For Odissi, she received training from Gangadhar Pradhan.[8][9] She regularly performs and holds workshops in India and abroad.[6][10][11]
