Shahir Shahidsaless (Persian: شهیر شهیدثالث, born in 1952 in Tehran) is an Iranian-Canadian journalist, political analyst, and author.[1][2][3] He is best known for his analytical reports on international relations, primarily focusing on Iran domestic and foreign affairs, the Middle East, and the US foreign policy in the region.[4][5][6]

Early life and Education[edit]

Born in Tehran, Iran, Shahidsaless completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology. Later, he pursued his interest in International Relations at the University of London, and earning a Master of Arts degree in Geopolitics and Grand Strategy from the University of Sussex.[7]

Career[edit]

Shahidsaless' analytical writings on the Middle East, Iran, and US-Iran relations have been featured in various reputable outlets. He is a regular contributor to BBC Persian[8][9][10], and has also contributed to prominent publications including Huffington Post[11], Newsweek[12], Middle East Eye[13], Gulf News[14][15], Al-Monitor[16], and London based Asharq al-Awsat both in English[17] and Persian.[18] Shahidsaless is frequently interviewed on Voice of America Persian[19], BBC Persian[20], and the London-based TV network Iran International.[21]

Shahidsaless has also contributed to renowned think tanks, including the Atlantic Council[22] and the Stimson Center.[23]

Controversy[edit]

In 2007, Shahidsaless filed a lawsuit against Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Shirin Ebadi, in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan.[24] He alleged that Ebadi had backed out of an agreement to find a publisher for a book he had written at her request.[25][26] The book, titled "A Useful Enemy," was intended to counter Samuel Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" theory.[27] According to the lawsuit, the 'A Useful Enemy' book project "originated after Ebadi wrote a preamble for the Iranian edition of 'Sun in the Mist,' a book in Persian published in Germany in 2003 and in Iran in 2003.[28][29]

Personal life[edit]

Shahidsaless resides in Calgary, Canada, with his wife, Faranak Shakoori.[30]
