Professor Shahrad Taheri is a British clinician scientist and obesity expert. He has extensive experience in managing people with obesity and bariatric surgery and has led large obesity management and research groups in the UK and Qatar.
Education and Training
Taheri was educated at King's College School, Wimbledon. He then studied Physiology at King's College London where he obtained his BSc Hons.[1]. This was followed by an MSc in Human Biology at Lincoln College, Oxford, University of Oxford[1]. He obtained his medical degree (MBBS) with honours from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London[1]. He was house officer at the medical professorial unit at St Bartholomew's Hospital. He undertook further postgraduate medical training at the Royal Free Hospital and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at the Hammersmith Hospital. He obtained his PhD under the supervision of Stephen R. Bloom as a Wellcome Trust Fellow at Imperial College London[2]. His thesis was entitled "Investigation into the physiological role of the novel hypothalamic neuropeptides the orexins/hypocretins"[3]. He was then a Howard Hughes Medical Institute research associate at Stanford University working with Emmanuel Mignot[4]. He trained in endocrinology at the Hammersmith Hospital and Bristol Royal Infirmary. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2011[5] and has held academic positions at University of Bristol, University of Birmingham, Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell University[6]
