Shahzad Shams is a Pakistani neurosurgeon and medical academic. He served as professor of neurosurgery at King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Lahore. He has also held senior neurosurgery posts at Fatima Jinnah Medical College and its affiliated Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, at Lahore General Hospital, and at Services Hospital, Lahore.[1][2]
Shams's clinical work has included functional neurosurgery and deep brain stimulation (DBS) services for movement disorders. In 2017, Tsinghua University reported that a team led by Shams at Omar Hospital in Lahore performed the first overseas implantation of a Tsinghua-developed brain pacemaker device in a patient with Parkinson's disease.[3]
Career
Daily Pakistan reported in 2015 that Shams had been appointed professor of neurosurgery at Lahore General Hospital after previously heading neurosurgery at Fatima Jinnah Medical College and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The report also stated that he had worked on establishing neurosurgery departments at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Services Hospital.[1]
In November 2015, Daily Pakistan reported that Sir Ganga Ram Hospital had completed preparations for DBS surgery for Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and depression, and credited Shams, described as the former chairman of neurosurgery at the hospital, with an important role in establishing the service.[4]
In June 2017, Tsinghua University reported that Shams led a Pakistani medical team to Beijing Tiantan Hospital for the first international training course on Tsinghua's DBS device, and later led the Lahore surgery in which the device was implanted outside China for the first time.[3] A second Tsinghua University item, republished from ScienceNet, also named Shams as the doctor responsible for the operation and quoted him thanking the Chinese clinical and technical teams.[5]
The Pakistan Academy of Neurological Surgery lists Shams as chairman of neurosurgery at KEMU and describes his clinical interests as movement disorders, Parkinson's disease, tremor, dystonia, DBS, endoscopic neurosurgery, and minimally invasive neurosurgery.[6]
In January 2024, KEMU held a farewell ceremony for Shams on his retirement. Daily Pakistan reported that Shams had graduated from King Edward Medical College in 1987, served in several medical institutions, and held the posts of professor of neurosurgery and dean of surgery and allied specialties at KEMU.[2]
