Saila Chakraborty Bangla - শৈল চক্রবর্তীর (Penname Alias) (Born - 4th April 1909 - 14th October 1989) was an illustrator, painter, Sculptor Writer and puppeteer . He was one of the most celebrated cartoonists in Bengal also known as the "Father of Bengali Puppetry and Strip cartoons". The Kolkata Corporation logo was Conceptualised and drawn by him which is used till date.

Early life[edit]

Shaila Chakraborty was born to Uday Narayan Chakraborty and Rani Bala Devi at Andulmouri on 6th February 1909 and he had two elder Sisters. He was a Bright student in his childhood and did his ISC from Narasinghadutta College Howrah and Graduated from Kolkata City College with honours in Mathematics.

Career[edit]

He illustrated many books and novels, most notably; two novels of Rabindranath Tagore and Harshavardhan Govardhan of Shibram Chakraborty. He did illustrations drew pictures for world famous magician P.C Sorkar books and Narayan Ganguly's 'Tenida' publications were illustrated as well among others. Numerous art exhibitions were organised by him each and every one of which were successful, even though he never pursued art as a subject in college. The Internationally renowned film director Satyajit Ray also commended him on the matter that he was inspired by his Sketching and Illustrations. His comic works of Little Dakoo were published on the Amritabazar Patrika and were a huge hit for the children in Bengal, his story 'Kalo Pakhi' and Historical books 'Gadi Ghodar Golpo', 'Manush Aelo kota hote' earned him National awards. His works have also been published in the Kishore Bharati Patrika like Hah Hooh a Kingdom Story.
