During riots associated with the Belagavi Border Dispute, Sri Mangal Singh escaped with his wife and three sons, to Mumbai, where they lived together in the Astoria Hotel for two years. Due to his undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD, Shailendra struggled in his studies at Xavier’s school, but graduated as both class and sport’s captain. He worked as a server at the Shamiana Coffee Shop in the Taj Hotel. He was playing county cricket in 1987, when his father and brother requested him to return to India, to help found, with his older brother Harindra, the family’s first-ever business, an advertising company by the name of Percept Ltd.[12][49]
