Dr.Shaista Ahmad is an academic, author, and professional vocalist from Jammu and Kashmir. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Higher Education for Jammu and Kashmir, stationed at the Abdul Ahad Azad Memorial Degree College in Bemina, Srinagar.

Early life and education

Shaista Ahmad was born in Srinagar. She is the daughter of Peer Ahmad Ullah, a professional engineer. Her father was noted for his intellectual background and played a foundational role in her upbringing, encouraging his children to pursue higher academic and professional goals.

Dr.Shaista Ahmad earned her Bachelor of Science in 2000 from the Government College for Women, MA Road, Srinagar. She later specialized in Kashmiri literature, earning her Master of Arts in 2005 and an M.Phil. in 2012 from the University of Kashmir. Her M.Phil. thesis, titled "Habba Khatoonye Hyenzye shayiri Hund samaeji pout Manzar," analyzed the social context of the poetry of Habba Khatoon.

In 2017, she was awarded a Ph.D. from the Department of Kashmiri at the University of Kashmir. Her doctoral research focused on the linguistic contributions of the poet Mehmood Gami.

Career

Ahmad has held various teaching and research positions within the Jammu and Kashmir education system. In 2017, she was appointed as a member of the Kashmiri Advisory Board for the Sahitya Akademi. She has also served as a coordinator for the development of E-content in the Kashmiri language for colleges under the Cluster University of Srinagar.

Literary work

Ahmad has authored several books focused on the Kashmiri language:

  • Zaban Saaz Shayir – A research work on the poet Mahmood Gami.

Music

Ahmad is an approved vocalist for All India Radio and Doordarshan. Throughout her musical career, her father, Peer Ahmad Ullah, served as a primary supporter and mentor, standing by her as she pursued professional singing alongside her academic career. She has represented Kashmiri music in national cultural forums, including the Sufi Festival in Kolkata and New Delhi, and programs organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Her repertoire includes Sufiana Kalam, classical Naat poetry, and folk music. Notable performances include "Bal Yaras," "Lalvun Thovtham Naar Madno," and various classical Natiya poetry renditions.
