Shakti Foundation or Shakti Foundation for Disadvantaged Women is a Bangladeshi non-governmental organization focused on women's empowerment through microfinance, healthcare, and social development.[2][3] It was founded in 1992.[4]

History

Shakti Foundation for Disadvantaged Women was founded in 1992 by Humaira Islam in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with the goal of empowering low-income women through microfinance.[5][6][7] Initially focused on urban areas, the organisation expanded nationwide in the late 1990s, adding programs in healthcare, SME development, education, and climate resilience.[8] In 2007, Shakti was formally accredited by the Microcredit Regulatory Authority and registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau, allowing it to scale operations across the country.[9] Over time, it embraced digital tools and expanded services to rural areas, establishing mobile health clinics and community-based development programs.[10]

In 2005, the organisation was lending to 15,000 women.[11] Its total loans came to over ৳87 million, or two million US dollars, and it had received almost 100% back.[11] The average loan was ৳4,000, or 100 US dollars.[11] Its principles are based on those of the Grameen Bank.[12] It requires its clients to make savings.[12] The foundation uses artificial intelligence to identify and avoid fraud, such as borrowers who have misrepresented their circumstances.[13]
