Shan Shui Conservation Center (Shan Shui, Chinese: 山水自然保护中心 Shān Shuǐ Zì Rán Bǎo Hù Zhōng Xīn) is a Chinese NGO founded by professor Lü Zhi in 2007. This organisation focuses on species and ecosystem conservation and contributes to the coexistence of human and nature. Shan Shui’s work expands from species and communities in western China such as Sanjiangyuan, Sichuan and Yunnan, to urban environments in cities like Beijing and Shanghai[1].

Programs

Community-based Conservation

Shan Shui believes that indigenous communities whose livelihoods much depend on nature are the strength of biodiversity conservation. Over the past decade, Shan Shui has been working with communities in Sanjiangyuan region, Sichuan and Yunnan province. Shan Shui explores sustainable conservation practices based on single community units under the influence of commercialisation, policy, climate change and modernisation by combining traditional management with measures including community development, monitoring, patrol and resource management[2][3].

Current projects include: snow leopard and grassland ecosystem in Sanjiangyuan, giant panda and forest conservation in Sichuan, Gansu and Shǎnxi as well as forest restoration and conservation in Yunnan[4].

Nature Watch

In 2004, several biodiversity conservation organisations including Shan Shui jointly launched "Nature Watch " program, aiming at collecting more species baseline data, raising public awareness and promoting participation, further mainstreaming biodiversity conservation.

This program has supported several specific biodiversity surveys across the country and established a sharable database[5]. Conservation actions could be guided through analysing conservation status and gaps based on these data. Nature Watch program launched the BIA tool (Biodiversity Impact Assessment Tool)[6] which overlaps data of large constructions and biodiversity, to evaluate possible impacts and promote positive changes in related policies.

Urban Ecosystem

Urban ecosystem restoration team was formed in 2018, focusing on ecosystem restoration in areas with intensive human interventions such as cities, mines, constructions sites. Shan Shui explores new ways to restore vegetation, habitats and ecosystem functions, encourages and promotes public participation during these processes.
