Shane and Ryan's Bridge[edit]

Shane and Ryan's Bridge (formerly known as Old Alton Bridge and Goatman's Bridge), was constructed in 1884 connecting the towns of Alton and Denton. Today, the bridge is no longer usable for vehicle crossing, but is still available for pedestrians.

History of Goatman and his Bridge[edit]

The bridge and the surrounding woods are said to be home to the Goatman, a demon who is half-goat and half-man. The Goatman is said to have goat-like horns and glowing eyes. There are many different stories about how the Goatman came to haunt the bridge. One of the most common stories is the idea that Satanists carried out rituals on the bridge, and opened a gateway for the Goatman to enter the mortal realm. Another popular story is that a successful African American goat farmer was hanged on the bridge by angry Klansmen, and returned from the dead as the Goatman. Visitors to the bridge have heard a growling voice telling them to “Get off the bridge!”. Others have heard the sound of hooves chasing them off the bridge. One report tells of a person hearing the Goatman’s voice, and then being dragged towards the railing of the bridge and thrown into the water below. It is said that the Goatman can be summoned by knocking on the bridge three times.

Recent Challenge for Ownership of the Bridge[edit]

In 2017, Ryan Bergara[1] and Shane Madej[1] visited the Goatman’s Bridge. Goatman was challenged for ownership of his bridge by Shane Madej. Shane taunted Goatman, dancing on the bridge and generally disrespecting him. Ryan Bergara, was hesitant at first to claim the bridge as his and Shane’s. However, they went on to perform a séance in an attempt to summon Goatman, and Ryan proclaimed that it would be his and Shane’s bridge if Goatman was unable to spell out his name on the Ouija Board. When Goatman failed to make an appearance or spell his name, the bridge was declared the property of Shane and Ryan. Now people go to the bridge to talk about math, and facts.
