Shannon Global Energy Solutions designs and manufactures industrial insulation products, including a reusable and removable insulation blanket, which they claim improves thermal efficiency or acoustic performance.[2] Shannon was founded in 1988 in North Tonawanda, New York by Frank Kovacs and two partners. The company is now owned solely by Kovacs and employs approximately 62 people in the U.S. and Europe, generating approximately US$9.5 million in its latest fiscal year ending December 31, 2019.[3] The company also operates a manufacturing facility in Biharkeresztes, Hungary. In 2019, the company changed its name from Shannon Enterprises of W.N.Y. to Shannon Global Energy Solutions.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, installing thermal blankets on uninsulated saturated steam line valves and components yields hundreds of dollars of energy savings per component.[4] Shannon's products include INSULTECH[5] and consist of treated fabric used to cover mechanical equipment like a compressor, steam trap, gear drive, valve, plastic extruder[6], pipe fitting, steam component, gas turbine, steam turbine, engine exhaust pipe, silencer, muffler, and manifold. Shannon Thermal Blanket Insulation is a CAD-, CNC-produced, pre-engineered insulation system designed to save energy, capture radiant heat, minimize insulation maintenance, and improve the surrounding work environment.[7]
Products
Shannon removable and reusable thermal insulation blankets cover bare surfaces on steam fittings, valves, pumps and other components that produce radiant heat loss. The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center installed reusable thermal insulation blankets on large, uncovered 150-psi valves, which the medical center staff say had a surface temperature of 366 °F (186 °C) . With the valves wrapped in removable thermal insulation, the medical center staff say the surface temperature of the blankets dropped under 100 °F (38 °C).[8]
Shannon removable and reusable acoustic insulation blankets and shields wrap the components of machinery and industrial systems that produce noise at a decibel level exceeding safety standards. NIOSH case studies[9] show that engineers have designed various approaches to wrap heating, cooling and other components with industrial insulation and thereby reduce noise problems. ASTM-tested[10] insulation has lowered noise by up to 6dBA.[11][12]
Shannon safety shields and fire blankets cover mechanical and high-tech components subject to fire, water and chemical washdown.[13]
In 2020, Environment + Energy Leader magazine selected a thermal reusable insulation blanket as a Top Product of the Year.[14]
