ShaoLin[lower-alpha 1] is a 1999 3D fighting action-role-playing game for the PlayStation, developed by Polygon Magic. It was published in Japan by Media Works and later in Europe by THQ.

The game combines elements of a 3D fighting game with role-playing mechanics and is notable for supporting multiplayer battles for up to eight players, an uncommon feature on the platform.[1]

Gameplay

Based on wuxia fiction, the story follows the life of a martial artist known only as "Jun"[lower-alpha 2] in 19th-century Qing dynasty China.[1]

Players control Jun as they train in a chosen martial art and develop their abilities as a fighter. Depending on the selected art, a different story unfolds, often involving confrontations with a gang led by the game's antagonist, Han Lao Tai.

There are six martial arts to choose from: Shaolin, Jeet Kune Do, Tai Chi Chuan, Eight Extremities Fist, Hung Gar, and Drunken Boxing.[2]

Reception

David Mohr of M! Games found the fighting dull and basic, role-playing elements poorly fleshed out, and level-ups distributed arbitrarily.[3]

The French magazine Consoles + criticized the game for its choppy animation and flawed gameplay, although it noted positive aspects such as multiplayer battles and the inclusion of multiple martial arts styles, giving the game a score of 20/100.[4]

Notes

  1. Known in Japan as Lord of Fist (Japanese: ロード・オブ・フィス)
  2. Renameable by the player
