Shaowen Wang is a geographic information scientist, geographer, and computer scientist. He is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science and the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).[1]
He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Natural and Mathematical Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS) and as a Senior Faculty Fellow in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation. Wang is the founding director of the CyberGIS Center for Advanced Digital and Spatial Studies and the Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Institute for Geospatial Understanding through an Integrative Discovery Environment (I-GUIDE).[1]
Education
Wang received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from Tianjin University in 1995 and a Master of Science in Geography from Peking University in 1998. He went on to earn two degrees from the University of Iowa: a Master of Computer Science in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Geography in 2004.[1]
Career and research
At UIUC, Wang holds multiple faculty appointments. Beyond his primary professorships, he is a Faculty Affiliate at the Center for Social & Behavioral Science, the Department of Urban & Regional Planning, and the Discovery Partners Institute.
From 2017 to 2023, he served as Head of the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science. He was also the Associate Director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) for CyberGIS from 2010 to 2017.
His research focuses on CyberGIS (cyber-based geographic information systems), geospatial data science, and spatial artificial intelligence (AI). His work in CyberGIS has been described by Oxford Bibliographies as "foundational" to the development of the field.[2] As the director of I-GUIDE, he leads national efforts to develop scalable solutions for complex geospatial sustainability challenges.[3]
Honors and awards
Wang has been elected a Fellow of several major scientific organizations. These elections are significant indicators of academic notability per WP:PROF:
- 2024: Fellow of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS).[4]
- 2022: Fellow of the American Association of Geographers (AAG).[5]
- 2021: Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).[6]
- 2020: Fellow of the Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program.
His other awards include the AAG Distinguished Scholarship Honors (2022), the NSF CAREER Award (2009), and the NCSA Fellowship (2007). In 2025, he was named a Fellow of the President's Executive Leadership Program at the University of Illinois.[1]
