Sharif Moghaddam is an Iranian linguist. He is a university professor, accredited examiner, author, certified professional NAATI translator and a researcher. He has a demonstrated history of extensive research interest and publication in different areas of education, literacy, linguistics, and IELTS test issues.[1][2] He has published a number of books, book chapters, book reviews, and refereed journal articles.[3][4][5][6][7] Moghaddam has translated a number of books from English into Persian and numerous texts in various fields in both directions.[8][9][10]

Biography

Born in Iran in 1952, Moghaddam grew up in an educated family. His late father was a teacher with a keen interest in poetry and writing. In 1984, Moghaddam obtained a Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) in Economics and Commerce Management from Allameh Tabataba’i University in Tehran, Iran. Having taught English language and translated from English into Persian and vice-versa for many years, Moghaddam shifted his interest to focus on language and linguistics. Therefore, he pursued his post-graduate studies in English and obtained his Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from the Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran in 2002. In 2005, he moved to Australia to pursue his PhD Program in Linguistics. In 2010, he obtained his PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Adelaide, Australia.[11] His PhD dissertation was ‘An Investigation of IELTS Preparation Courses for University Study: Development of written and verbal argumentative texts’.[2] In 2011, he returned to Iran and began teaching at Sciences and Research Campus of the Islamic Azad University in Tehran.[21] Finally, he returned to Australia and began teaching at the University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program (UMELBP) in 2019.[12] And, in 2020, Moghaddam joined the University of Southern Queensland as an examiner of their graduate doctorate theses.[15]

Career and research

As a university professor, Moghaddam began teaching at Master’s level at the Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran in 2011.[21] In addition, he continued contributing to the Discipline of Linguistics, Adelaide University as an official examiner of their post-graduation dissertations.[13] Moreover, he continued with publication and acting as reviewer and editor of some universities, for example, University of Chitral, Pakistan, University of Constantine 2, Algeria, and Southern Queensland University, Australia.[14][15] Currently, he is a journal reviewer, a member of editorial board, and a member of International Advisory Board of some prestigious journals, for example, International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Culture (IJLLC), and official examiner and marker of Doctorate Degree dissertations at Southern Queensland University, Australia.[15][16]

Moghaddam has taught ELBP to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program, Hawthorn, Melbourne, and ELICOS at TAFE SA, Australia. Also, he teaches IELTS, OET, ISLPR, TOEFL, and PTE preparation courses. In addition, he is an Ex-ISLPR Global Accredited Tester.

As a researcher, he has conducted different studies qualitatively and quantitatively and mixed.[17][18][19]

As a recognized and certified professional translator (NAATI Accredited Professional Translator Persian < - > English), Moghaddam has translated a number of books, articles and numerous texts in different areas of knowledge in both directions.[8][9][10][20]

Contributions to linguistics

Moghaddam has worked and taught in a variety of areas such as Techniques & Principles in Language Teaching, Issues in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Advance & Academic Writing, Exploring Translation Theories, Critical Review of Translated Works, Translation, Morphology, Etymology, Synonymy, Phonology, ESP (Molecular & Cellular Biology), EAP (MBA), and General English.[21] He has taught English as Second Language (ESL) and English as Foreign Language (EFL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), for a number of years both in Iran and in Australia. He has been the first author of some books and journal articles and has translated a number of books from English into Persian.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]
