Sharon Country Club is a private country club in Sharon, Massachusetts, United States. It features a historic 9-hole golf course, practice facilities, and a clubhouse opened in 2020. It is notable for its course design by Stiles & Van Kleek and for its role in regional amateur golf tournaments.

History

Golf in Sharon began in 1898, when a group of men rented part of George O’Leary’s pasture on East Street and laid out a rudimentary course. [1] The first clubhouse was a small building near the center of the property; cows were used for mowing fairways and fertilizing and kept off greens by pipes. [1]

In 1921, Tom O’Leary (George’s son) sold the farm to Sharon Country Club. The O’Leary dairy barn was converted into a clubhouse, completed in 1923. Tom O’Leary served as superintendent of the course for some 35 years. [1]

In 1925, Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek were engaged to design a 9-hole course at Sharon CC. [1] The course remained 9 holes into the 21st century; in 2002, three additional holes were added. [1]

A new clubhouse was opened in Spring 2020. [2]

Course

The golf course is a 9-hole regulation layout, designed by Wayne E. Stiles and John Van Kleek in the 1920s. It is laid out in rolling New England terrain with stone walls, mature deciduous trees, and elevation changes. Tee boxes are multiple sets allowing different yardage configurations. Greens are described as having subtle breaks, often sloping back to front, sometimes with false fronts and mounded bunkers. [3] An independent directory confirms the architect attribution and course details. [4]

Events and competitions

Sharon Country Club has been a venue for qualifying rounds of state amateur golf tournaments. For example, it hosted the 2025 Massachusetts Amateur qualifying round. [5]

Membership and facilities

The club operates as a private membership facility. The clubhouse opened in 2020, replacing older structures. Practice amenities include a driving range (grass and mat tees), short game practice areas including chipping, bunker practice, and putting greens. Dining, social events, and member tournaments are part of the programming. [2] [3]

Significance

Sharon Country Club is recognized in the golf architecture community for its design by Wayne E. Stiles & John Van Kleek, designers notable in early 20th-century New England golf course design. [6] The club is active in the Massachusetts amateur golf scene, hosting qualifying tournaments. Its recent clubhouse replacement reflects ongoing investment and upkeep. Coverage by state golf organizations helps support its notability. [5]
