Sharp Health Plan
Sharp Health Plan is a not-for-profit commercial health plan that serves San Diego and southern Riverside counties. Sharp Health Plan is a local subsidiary and insurance branch of Sharp HealthCare, which is comprised of 4 acute-care hospitals, 3 specialty hospitals, and 3 affiliated medical groups.[1]
History[edit]
Sharp Health Plan was founded in 1992[2]. Before 2015, Sharp Heath Plan exclusively provided commercial group policies for local businesses. [3] In 2013, it was announced that Sharp Health Plan would be offered through the Covered California individual and SHOP marketplace. [4] Sharp Health Plan is the only local health care plan available through Covered California to San Diego residents.[5]In 2018, it was reported that they had over 145,000 members and 300 employees. [6]

- Melissa Hayden Cook [7] has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Sharp Health Plan since 2005
- Rita Datko has been Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since 2005
- Leslie Pels-Beck has been Chief Operations Officer since 2001 and Vice President since 2005
- Michael Byrd has been Vice President and Chief Business Development Officer since 2011
- Dr. Cary Shames has been Vice President and Chief Medical Officer since 2015

Sharp Health Plan offers San Diego residents of all ages access to insurance through their individual and family plans, Medicare plans, and commercial group plans. As part of an integrated delivery system with Sharp HealthCare, members have access to award-winning medical groups, hospitals and providers. Sharp Health Plan’s individual product offers multiple benefit plans with varying levels of coverage across 2 primary networks, Premier and Performance.[8]
Their Sharp Direct Advantage Medicare product offers 4 different benefit plans, including a Medicare plan that is exclusive for City of San Diego retirees.[9] Employers enrolling in their commercial group plans can choose from 4 networks that offer care from over 2,000 doctors, including: Premier, Performance, Value, and Choice.[10]
Other services include:
- Sharp Nurse Connection®, an after-hours nurse advice phone service.
- Access to MinuteClinic®, walk-in clinics located inside select CVS/pharmacy® stores.
- Emergency Travel Services for members traveling abroad or over 100 miles away from San Diego.
- Best Health® wellness program, which offers health coaching, classes, and other free wellness services for members like discounted and free gym memberships through programs such as Active&Fit® and Silver&Fit®.[11]

Sharp Health Plan is recognized in California and nationally:[12]
- They are the only Covered California health plan to receive a 5-star Summary Quality Rating, and a 5-star Members’ Care Experience Rating. [12]
- They have an “Excellent” accreditation status – the highest status awarded by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).[13]
- They are the highest member-rated health plan in California from the NCQA for health care, personal doctor, specialist, getting care quickly and customer service among reporting California health plans.[14]
- They are one of the highest-rated health plans in the nation with a rating of 4.5 out of 5 in NCQA’s Private Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2017-2018.[15]
- Their Best Health wellness program is one of a select group of health plan wellness programs nationally to receive NCQA Wellness & Health Promotion (WHP) accreditation.[16]
