Shaun Fix PMD, NREMT-P (/ˈlɒn/; born January 5, 1963) is the President and founder of Emergency Medical Consultants, Inc. aka EMC Medical Training, which provides medical training across the United States and internationally.[1] He began practicing and teaching in 1983, covering subjects that affect the hospital and pre-hospital medical settings. Shaun has a bachelor's degree in Emergency Medical Service Management and has held faculty positions at several colleges. Shaun recently retired as the head of EMS for Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services in Palm Beach County, Florida. He has spoken at conferences across the nation, and has appeared on FETN, Pulse, 24-7 EMS, Medic Monthly, Emergency Medical Update Videos, and more.[2][3][4] Shaun values education, but he also believes learning should be fun. He covers serious situations in a manner that is welcoming for newcomers and experienced medical providers alike.[5] Shaun has written several texts, including "Success in ACLS" and "Safety and Survival in Emergency Medicine."[4]

Career

Shaun became a firefighter in 1983, after completing the training program at Florida State Fire College. He then attended Santa Fe College while working as a firefighter and EMT for Alachua Fire Rescue and Levy County EMS. In 1984, he earned his Associate of Science in Emergency Medical Services, which earned him the title of Paramedic. He moved from Alachua to St. Lucie County, Florida in 1984. He then joined St. Lucie County Fire District as a Firefighter/Paramedic and served from 1984-1989.[6][7]

In 1988, Shaun started Emergency Medical Consultants, Inc. with the goal of providing quality medical training to others in the field.[8] The following year, he joined Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services as a paramedic and firefighter.[6] He climbed the ranks at Boca Raton Fire Rescue while simultaneously growing his company. In 1990, Emergency Medical Consultants hired its first part-time secretary. By 1991, there were full-time and part-time staff, as well as several nurses and paramedics teaching the various courses. In 1994, Shaun was promoted to Engine Company Lieutenant. He then started speaking at conferences across the nation on topics such as stress, critical incidents, and safety and self-defense in emergency medicine.[4]

In 1997, Shaun received his next promotion, becoming an EMS Lieutenant for Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services. The next year, his company moved into its first official office in Port St. Lucie, Florida. EMC continued to grow, and a second office was acquired in 2000. In 2002, after earning several accolades at Boca, Shaun was promoted to EMS Captain.[6] Shaun built a 6,000 square foot facility to become EMC's headquarters in 2006. Shaun has grown the company steadily, and they now employ 14 full-time staff, over 150 instructors, and teach thousands of courses annually.
