Shawn V. Portmann. (May 7, 1954 – ) is an American broadcast and marketing executive, consultant and former Disney i.d.e.a.s. Chief Operating Officer, responsible for overall daily operations of a major production, post-production and creative facility. Executive Producer of more than 200 television commercials, several of which won Gold ADDY awards.

Early Life and Education

Shawn V. Portmann was born in Lima, Ohio, the son of Dr. Frank and Bonnie Portmann. Portmann is American and Roman Catholic. His paternal and maternal grandparents were German.

Throughout his early life in middle school and high school, Portmann found work in the summers as a hospital orderly, farmer and landscaper. Portmann attended Shawnee High School where he participated in football, wrestling, tennis, swimming and snow skiing.

Portmann was accepted to The Ohio State University where he studied political science and government. He worked in the field of broadcasting at CBS as Vice President and General Manager, where he led programming, sales, finance, engineering, traffic and production in the 1980s and into the early 1990s. Portmann graduated with honors in 1991 with a Master of Business Administration in Statistics.

Career

CBS Radio

Portmann developed and implemented policies, standards and procedures for keeping the stations FCC compliant. He was responsible for developing a staff of over 100, which went on to create record ratings and revenues for over 9 years. At 32 years of age, he was the youngest person ever to be named Vice President/General Manager of a CBS owned and operated station.[1]

Clear Channel Communications

Portmann managed six stations owned and operated by Radio Equity Partners/Clear Channel Communications in the Fort Myers, Florida area. Those operations combined boasted a value of more than $75 million.

Paxson Communications

During Portmann’s time with Paxson Communications he served as Vice President and General Manager of WXPX-TV Channel 66[2], a Paxson Communications property in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida.

The Walt Disney Company

As Chief Operating Officer of Disney i.d.e.a.s. located at Disney MGM Studios, Portmann was responsible for the overall and daily operations of a major production, post-production and creative facility. Assisting in negotiation of contracts with key clients and vendors, and also participating in the development of new business accounts in various target sectors[3].

Gen2Media

As Executive Vice President of Gen2Media[4], Portmann formulated company policies, revenue and expense budgets, planned usage of materials and led human resources. He also managed all client sales activity and contract negotiations, while leading the company’s strategic business development activities, overseeing the implementation of sales and marketing initiatives and the management of key client accounts.

MARC Radio Group

As President and General Manager, Portmann planned, directed and coordinated the operations of the organization. He was responsible for sales, finance, human resources, production, engineering and technology departments.

Good Life 45

During Portmann’s time at Good Life 45, he developed and managed over $1.5 million in sponsorship support. Portmann was responsible for ensuring station development exceeded monthly, quarterly and annual sponsorship goals. He was accountable for the management and coordination of all sales revenue development, sponsor development, and ancillary product and event marketing.

Mojo Brands

At Mojo Brands, Portmann was responsible for generating over $8 million dollars in annual sales and marketing revenues. He was also responsible for producing cost-effective, near-to-consumer brand messaging for a multi-platform ecosphere. Accountable for new business development and the daily functions of local and national sales teams, producing and distributing nationally syndicated shows The Daily Buzz and Emotional Mojo. The Daily Buzz is available on CBS, FOX, ABC, CW, My Network and independent affiliates reaching 70% of the country across 79 million homes in 146 markets.

Later Career

Following Portmann’s career as a broadcast executive, he formed PAX and Peace Communications, consulting clients in the broadcast and digital media industry, where he works with executive teams rolling out digital media and broadcasting projects. He has become an adviser to The Jet Set, HyperUp and The Tech Show. In addition to his consulting and advisory roles, Portmann has played an active role in the Roman Catholic Church.
