The Sheepshead Bay Houses is a NYCHA housing complex with 18 six-story residential buildings that are located between Avenue V to X and also between Nostrand Avenue to Batchelder Street in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn.[2]

Plans for the 1,056 apartment development were announced in December 1947 as part of a larger plan by the New York City Housing Authority to construct projects in all five boroughs of the city with an aggregate of 32,808 apartments.[3][4] Partial funding had previously been announced in January of that year, with $4.918 million in notes sold for use on Sheepshead Bay and three other projects.[5] Construction bids were scheduled for October 26.[6]

The development is located next to the Nostrand Houses Housing Complex also owned by NYCHA that has $400M renovation project upcoming with many upgrades.[7] The two developments have a combined population of more than 4000 families.[8] In 2023, the Federal Emergency Management Agency reported that the two developments are "are at risk of extreme flooding due to their proximity to a coastal water body and increased rainfall from climate change" and that $23.08 million had been allocated for a stormwater management system.[9] In 2025, the New York Times reported that this funding had been eliminated as part of a $325 million reduction in federal funding to New York State.[8]

History

Before the housing complex had started construction, it had attracted millionaires in the 19th century and the Sheepshead Bay Racetrack was located there that was built in 1880 primarily for horse racing, then it had changed to for cars, and then shuttered due to bankruptcy.[10]

These buildings were completed on the former Sheepshead Bay Racetrack on August 1950.[10]
