Sheet Harbour Passage, Nova Scotia
Sheet Harbour Passage is a rural community on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, in the Halifax Regional Municipality. The community is located along the eastern coast of Sheet Harbour, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, and is located about 14 km (8.7 mi) southeast of the community of the same name.[1][2][3] The community is located along the Sheet Harbour Passage, which separates neighboring Sober Island from the mainland.[4][5] The waters to the south of the community are dotted with numerous islands. The land area of the community also includes several islands farther off the coast, including Sutherland Island, and Beaver Island.[6][7] Weather stations and an automated lighthouse are maintained on Beaver Island as well.[8][9][10][11] The first lighthouse on the island was built in 1846. A combined house and light was built in the mid 1910s. The light was automated in 1987.[10] Today, the lighthouse is a circular fiberglass tower standing 11 m (36 ft) high and 20 m (66 ft) above the water.[10]
