The first fixture between Sheffield United and Newcastle United in the 2023–24 Premier League season was played on 24 September 2023 at Bramall Lane, Sheffield. The score was 3–0 at half-time, and Newcastle United scored five times in the second half to win the match 0–8. The match marks several records, including Sheffield United's worst league defeat in the club's history, matches Newcastle United's biggest Premier League win, marks Newcastle United's biggest Premier League away win and holds a Premier League record of having eight players score without any getting a brace. It is also one of the highest winning margins in the Premier League.

Background[edit]

Before the game commenced, Sheffield United were in 17th place in the Premier League on one point, while Newcastle United were in 12th place on six points. Sheffield United were promoted to the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship the previous season, and lost their first three games in the Premier League in August against Crystal Palace (0–1), Nottingham Forest (2–1) and Manchester City (1–2). On 30 August Sheffield United played Lincoln City in the EFL Cup at home, and lost 2–3 on penalties. On 2 September 2023 Sheffield United got their first point in a 2–2 draw against Everton, before losing 2–1 against Tottenham Hotspur. Newcastle United won their first game of the Premier League season against Aston Villa 5–1, and then lost three games against Manchester City (1–0), Liverpool (1–2) and Brighton & Hove Albion (3–1). On 16 September Newcastle United won 1–0 against Brentford at home, and three days later drew 0–0 against AC Milan away in the Champions League.

Prior to kick-off Sheffield United players wore number 8 shirts with Maddy Cusack's name on them in tribute to the Sheffield United player's recent passing, and the club's matchday programme showed Cusack in a Sheffield United shirt on the cover.

The game was televised live on Sky Sports, and highlights of the match were released on Youtube by Sky Sports, Sheffield United and Newcastle United.

Post-Match[edit]

After losing 0–8 Sheffield United dropped to 20th place in the Premier League, two points behind AFC Bournemouth in 17th place and behind Burnley and Luton Town on goal difference. After winning 0–8 Newcastle United rose to 8th place in the table, one point behind West Ham United in 7th place and ahead of Manchester United in 9th place on goal difference.
