Shekhar Bhojraj
Shekhar Yeshwant Bhojraj is an Indian spine surgeon, researcher, and the founder of The Spine Foundation, a non-profit organisation providing spine care to underprivileged and tribal populations in India. He has been a pioneering figure in establishing spine surgery as a specialised field in the country.[1]
Early life and education
Bhojraj earned his MBBS and MS (Orthopaedics) with first rank from KEM Hospital, Mumbai, in March 1983. He further received specialized fellowships in spinal surgery: AO Spine Fellowship (UK & Switzerland), Y. Cotrel Spine Fellowship (France), and Kenton Leathermann Spine Fellowship (USA).[2]
Career
Bhojraj began his career as an orthopaedic surgeon and later focused on spine surgery. He led the formation of the dedicated Spine Unit at KEM Hospital in 1988 and later founded The Spine Foundation in 1998 to extend spinal care into rural and tribal India through surgical camps, mobile clinics, education, and prevention programmes.[3]
He has also served as Consultant Spine Surgeon at P. D. Hinduja Hospital, Lilavati Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital, and held academic leadership roles including Professor of Orthopaedics and Chief of Neurospinal Unit at KEM Hospital, and Director (Medical Wing) at the Centre for Study of Society Changes, Mumbai.[4][5]
Awards and recognition
- Ranked first in Orthopaedics for his MS exam, March 1983.[6]
- A. A. Mehta Gold Medal for best paper at the IOA conference, Visakhapatnam, 1987.[7]
- Young Surgeons Forum Award, 1990.[8]
- Professor Darai Swamy Memorial Oration Award for thoracic and thoracolumbar hyperkyphosis surgery, 1999.[9]
- Honorary D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) awarded at the D. Y. Patil Awards, Kolhapur, in recognition of his contributions to spinal health.[10]
- Served as President and Chief Trustee of The Spine Foundation and Past President of the Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI).[11]
Philanthropy
Since 2004, under Dr Bhojraj’s leadership, The Spine Foundation in collaboration with NGO SEARCH has conducted over 500 free spinal surgeries in Gadchiroli, along with thousands of non-surgical treatments and rehabilitation services—emphasising community training and conservative management techniques.[12]
