Shelley Sykes (born July 29, 1962)[1] is an author and inspirational speaker best known for her work as a "Happiness Guru".[2][3] and her autobiography Callum's Cure. Co-founder of Happy Charity.[4]
Early life
Sykes was born in West Yorkshire, England.[1]
Education
Sykes went to Brighouse Girls Grammar School. She received her MBA in 1984. She has a B.Sc. IT from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Studied Journalism at the University of Bradford receiving her Diploma in Journalism.[5] In 2008 she received an honorary PhD from the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates for her creative works with Edward de Bono.
Career
Sykes worked in IT for Construction, Banking & Tourism companies before deciding to start her own company. She founded the Beautiful chain of Spas, which were in 5-star Hotels, including the Crowne Plaza, in the UK and Australia.[6][7] She now works as an Author, Actress, Professional Speaker & Designer.[8] She styles Homes, Hotels & Spas.[9]
In 2003 Shelley raised money to take 69 kids and 5 adults from Youth off the Streets in Australia to Tony Robbins' Discovery Camp in San Diego where she and her son Rory were keynote speakers. Instead of a traditional keynote, she rapped her message which was later released as her first single 'Rappin' Mama'.[10][11][12]
She received the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation from the National Speakers Association in 2005.[13]
Edward de Bono dubbed Shelley 'The Happiness Guru' and has co-written books with her.[14] Her first book, an autobiography titled 'Callum's Cure' was originally published by Simon & Schuster in 2003 and was later republished by Beautiful Unlimited in 2006, subsequently winning a National Indie Excellence Award. 'Hats to Heels' won American Book Fest's Best Health, Beauty and Fashion book, while 'The Happiness Bug', 'Sexy Single & Ready to Mingle' and 'Words of Inspiration' were all finalists in their respective categories in 2007.[15]
Philanthropy
She started fundraising for children's hospitals after her son Rory was born blind and diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.[16][17][8][1] In 2005 she founded Happy Charity with her son Rory, a charity 100% run by volunteers.[18] In 2007 Dubai started celebrating 'Global Happiness Day'.[19]
Personal life
Shelley, her mother, Pauline and her son Rory all share the same birthday, July 29, 1962, 1944 and 1992 respectively.[1] She has heterochromia, a condition that causes eyes to have irises of different colors. In Shelley's case, her left eye is blue and brown and her right eye is blue.
In May 1989 she married Leigh, a programmer, in Acapulco, Mexico. They had one son and divorced 18 months later in early 1994.[20]
She and her son moved to Sydney, Australia in 2001.[8][21]
