Sher Doruff
Sher Doruff (born 1950) is a queer American-Dutch artist, writer, theorist and educator. Born in Evanston, Illinois, she earned a BA in Fine Arts from Webster University and received her PhD from the University of the Arts London / Central Saint Martins in 2006. Her graduate research focused on potential in performative translocal interplay.[1]. Doruff's work spans the fields of visual art, performance art and music, digital art, philosophy, critical theory, and fiction writing. She has been an artist in residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and at the STEIM Foundation in Amsterdam. As an educator, she mentors and supervises PhD / 3rd cycle artist researchers at the DAS Graduate School (Amsterdam University of the Arts) in Amsterdam.

Artistic Research & Teaching
From 2002-2020 Doruff taught in the Master of Choreography program at the Amsterdam University of the Arts DAS Graduate School. Since 2009, she has been a tutor and supervisor to artists pursuing practice-led PhD’s in programs throughout Europe, heading Making Things Public at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and THIRD at DAS Graduate School.[21][22] From 2013-2017 she was on the editorial board of the Journal for Artistic Research (JAR).[23] Doruff has been associated with Erin Manning's Concordia-based SenseLab[24] since 2015. She has been a partner in the Immediations project.[25]
Digital Art
From 1998-2007 Doruff worked at Waag Society in Amsterdam as team leader[26] of the KeyWorx[27] project (distributed performance software framework, formerly KeyStroke) and as Creative Director of the Sensing Presence program. She edited the Connected Live Art catalogue, and published Collaborative Culture and EmergentC's for V2_'s Making Art of Databases (2003).[28] She performed with artists Motherboard,[29] Michelle Teran,[30] and Jeff Mann,[31] Johannes Birringer, Eric Redlinger,[32] and others.
Sound Composition
In 1974 she became a founding member of the Chicago band Care of the Cow,[33] with Victor Sanders and Christine Baczewska. She was a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and singer with the Care of the Cow. Signed to the Dharma Records label in 1977, the album Ode on a Gertrude Stein was never released. In 1981, the band released I Still Don’t Know Your Style on Fame and Fortune Records. In 1983, Care of the Cow released Dogs’ Ears Are Stupid, a cassette distributed by New Music Distribution Service. In 2018, Guerssen Records[34] re-released this recording on vinyl and streaming platforms.[35][36]
From 1983-1991, Doruff composed music for dance and theater companies in New York City including David Wolpe and Carol Clements’ The Social Animal at La Mama, Kinematic’s Broken Hill at Dance Theater Workshop and collaborations with composer Frankie Mann. She received an National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Opera/Music Theater development grant with librettist Karen Dunn in 1988,[37] and a residency at Cité Internationale des Artes in Paris from 1990-1991.
