Shiang-Kwei Wang
Shiang-Kwei Wang is an American academic leader, researcher, and advocate for educational access and innovation. She currently serves as the President of CT State Community College – Gateway Campus in New Haven, Connecticut.[1] Previously, she was the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY).[2] Wang is known for her scholarship in educational technology, culturally responsive pedagogy, and digital equity, as well as her leadership in community-based education initiatives.
Early life and education
Wang earned her Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Georgia. Her academic background includes training in computer science, cognitive science, and education. She is originally from Taiwan and is fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English.
Career
Early career
Wang began her academic career as a professor of instructional technology and served as Director of the Educational Technology program at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). She led federally funded research projects, collaborated with NASA and the American Museum of Natural History, and mentored K–12 teachers in technology-enhanced instruction.[3]
Her work contributed to national discussions on digital literacy and equity, notably addressing the myth that young people inherently know more about technology than teachers.[4][5]
In a widely cited interview, she explained distinctions between so-called "digital immigrants" and "digital natives," challenging oversimplified narratives about generational tech gaps.[6]
Hostos Community College
As Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Hostos Community College, Wang led several major initiatives, including the implementation of the Academic Implementation Plan, the integration of AI skills into the curriculum, strengthened engagement with industry partners, the redesign of the college’s student support services, and improvements in online delivery and operational efficiency.[7] She also played a key role in securing a $3 million Title V grant.
CT State Gateway Community College
In 2025, Wang was appointed President of the Gateway Campus of CT State Community College, part of Connecticut’s newly consolidated statewide community college system. As president, she leads one of the system’s largest campuses, with a focus on advancing student success, workforce-aligned programs, and community partnerships.[8]
Research and publications
Wang’s scholarship centers on instructional technology integration, teacher preparation, and culturally responsive STEM education. She has authored peer-reviewed articles and served as principal investigator or co-PI on several federal research grants. Her academic work is frequently cited in the fields of education technology and professional development.
Awards and recognition
In 2024, Wang was recognized as one of City & State New York’s Asian Power 100, honoring influential Asian American leaders across New York State.[9] In 2025, she was also named to the publication’s Asian American Trailblazers list, which recognizes leaders making significant contributions in public service, education, and advocacy.[10]

Wang is known for her advocacy in educational access, especially for underrepresented communities and immigrant families.
