Shifaq Mufeed (Commonly known as Histo)[3] is a Maldivian politician and former Member of Parliament.
Shifaq started his political career in his late twenties and in 2009, at the age of 29, he was elected[4] as a Member of Parliament, which made him the youngest Parliamentarian elected from his native atoll.[5] One year prior to the completion of his term, he announced in the state media that he wished to give the opportunity to other youths like him and would not contest for a second term.[6] This made him the first parliamentarian in the Maldives’ history to make such a decision to motivate and empower youths. Since 2014, Histo has filled different State/Government portfolios, which include Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives,[7] Minister of State at the Ministry of Home Affairs [8] and as the Minister-Counselor at Embassy of Maldives in Sri Lanka.
Early life
Born to an ordinary family in the south of the Maldives and raised by a single mother as a half orphan with three other siblings, his character is very much shaped by his humble upbringing[9]. Working hard, being honest, taking responsibility, respecting others and helping people are values instilled in him by his mother. At the age of 12, he left his native island (Fuvahmulah) in pursuit of education and work. Having to live independently at such a young age, Shifaq learned to appreciate the differences in people and the complexities of life. It has also created a desire within him to help those people who are not fortunate enough to enjoy the same opportunities that he had. His strong leadership skills, creative approaches to solving problems, ability to relate to a wide range of people and excellent oratory skills made him one of the most notable students in his academic life, which earned him a respectable position within the community. After completion of GCE O Level, due to the family's poor financial condition, at the age of 15, Shifaq started his employment journey as a delivery boy in a café in the capital Malé for a wage of Maldivian Rufiyaa 25.00 (less than USD 2.00) per week. Shifaq considers that this was his first rung on the ladder of success in his career. During the past, he has filled various positions in the government bureaucracy. Shifaq, who had articulation disorder until his adolescent age, finds joy in teaching and training school children and youth for public speaking. He also works as a judge on a voluntary basis in the national Speech Contest and other Speech contests organized by state institutions like Maldives National Defense Force, Maldives Police Service and Maldives Broadcasting Corporation.[10]
