Shikhar Tyagi (born 26 October 1993) is an Indian academic statistician and computational researcher. He is a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.[1] His research focuses on survival analysis, frailty modeling, reliability engineering under complex censoring schemes, and parameter estimation via the Expectation–Maximization (EM) algorithm.[2]

Tyagi is an active software developer in the R ecosystem, maintaining 41 open-source packages on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) and the rOpenSci R-universe platform.[3][4]

Early life and education

Tyagi was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. He completed his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mathematics, Statistics, and Economics at Meerut College in 2013, followed by a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Statistics in 2015 and a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Statistics in 2016 from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.[2]

In 2022, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Statistics from the Central University of Rajasthan under the supervision of Arvind Pandey. His doctoral thesis, titled Some Contributions to Frailty Models for Survival Data, examined extensions of the proportional hazards model incorporating shared frailty distributions under random and left-censoring mechanisms.[5]

Academic career

Tyagi began his teaching career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at GITAM (Bangalore campus) in December 2021. In September 2022, he joined the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Christ University (Bangalore) as an Assistant Professor, teaching courses in computational statistics, Bayesian inference, and econometrics.[2]

In January 2025, Tyagi was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, where he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in multivariate analysis, advanced statistical theory, and probability.[1]

Research and contributions

Tyagi's research addresses theoretical and applied statistical modeling with an emphasis on survival analysis, reliability engineering, and computational algorithms:

  • Frailty and Survival Models: Developing bivariate and shared frailty models using Inverse Gaussian, Generalized Lindley, and Weibull baseline distributions to account for unobserved heterogeneity in clustered survival data.[6][7]
  • Expectation–Maximization (EM) Algorithms: Formulating automated EM routines for parameter estimation and standard error calculation under complex censoring mechanisms (including progressive Type-II, interval, and hybrid censoring), utilizing the Louis (1982) missing information principle and supplemented EM (SEM) methods.[8]
  • Statistical Quality Control: Formulating generalized process capability indices (GPCIs) under progressive censoring and non-normal lifetime models for industrial quality assurance.[9]
  • Bayesian Econometrics and Time Series: Developing Bayesian unit root testing frameworks for panel data models and linear spline trend approximations.[10]
